According to the CDC, about 1 in 4 adults in the US have some form of arthritis pain. Arthritis is a broader term used to describe various conditions that affect the joints and surrounding tissues. The most common type, osteoarthritis, involves the breakdown of cartilage in joints, and is more prevalent as we age. Another type- rheumatoid arthritis- occurs when the body's immune system "attacks" its own joints, also causing painful inflammation.
While there is currently no treatment or therapy that reverses cartilage loss, and while the joint pain from arthritis may limit function and daily activities, many people seek some form of pain relief, and thus may turn to acupuncture.
How Acupuncture Affects Arthritis
Research shows that when an acupuncture needle is placed into the body, a number of physiological events occur. A signal is produced, releasing neurotransmitters such as endorphins and enkephalins, that reduce the sensation of pain. Research also shows that acupuncture induces cortisol production, the hormone that helps control inflammation, which in turn is how acupuncture is used to help relieve arthritis pain.
It is important to note that while acupuncture can help relieve the pain and inflammation that comes with arthritis, it is not a cure. Patient's generally come for acupuncture treatments once a week for a few weeks, or until the arthritis is under control, then come monthly for routine maintenance or whenever needed.
Make sure to seek out a licensed, board certified acupuncturist for any acupuncture treatment. Remember to also ask about their education background, as well as previous experience in treating whatever specific condition you may be coming in to acupuncture for.
