What is Sciatica?
The sciatic nerve is one of the largest nerves in the body, which travels down the butt and through the legs. One of the more common symptoms of sciatica is radiating pain, which may include numbness and tingling starting in the low back that radiates down the legs.
One of the most common causes for sciatic pain is due to a pinched nerve. In most cases, the nerve is pinched due to extremely tight gluteal muscles, which then cause the sciatic pain. The pressure then causes the nerve to become inflamed, causing the pain and potential for the nerve to malfunction and also causes the sensation of numbness and tingling.
How does Acupuncture help treat sciatica and sciatic nerve inflammation?
There is substantial research showing that acupuncture is a great and effective alternative treatment method to standard medical care.
Acupuncture is shown to:
-stimulate nerves located in the muscles and other tissues
-improve muscle stiffness and joint mobility by increasing local micro-circulation, which in turn helps to disperse any local swelling
-increases the level of serotonin and noradrenaline, which help reduce pain and speed nerve recovery
Once the needles are inserted, the muscles will start to relax and endorphins are released, helping to reduce pain. The back, hip and pelvis are all very interconnected, and the treatment should address all of them.
After the pain is gone, it is important to incorporate stretching into one's routine to maintain a healthy back and keep those muscles relaxed.
